A Southern California Tradition: Watching the Ponies

We’re a long way from the Kentucky Derby, but Southern California still offers some great horse racing options – even in the off season.

The Oak Tree Racing Association will be starting its fall season in September and it will run into October at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia. With general admission only $5.00 and kids under 17 free, how can you go wrong?

The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club is nearing the end of its racing season, but is still offering more racing through mid-September. Along with excellent cuisine, this venue offers an infield filled with family activities, such as giant slides, a petting zoo, pony rides, and skateboard exhibitions. Fridays offer evening concerts at Plaza de Mexico, and on Sunday, old horse-racing movies are screened. General admission is slightly higher at $8.00.

Los Alamitos Race Course offers year round racing season, plus only $3.00 general admission for adults (kids are free with an adult). Often a hangout for serious horseplayers, this course is also home to Ed Burgart – probably the best quarter horse handicapper in the world. Ed can often be found at Clockers’ Corner giving out selections for each race.

Unfortunately, Hollywood Park in Inglewood will not start racing until mid-November. This is the track to hangout with celebs at the Turf Club. Great food and amenities, including an adjoining casino with a health club, massage center, and beauty salon, can be found at Hollywood Park.

Now go watch the ponies!
